Havenwood House & Gardens is located in northwestern Pennsylvania, horticultural zone 5/6, about an hour north of Pittsburgh and an hour south of Lake Erie.
The garden is divided into many different garden rooms, in semi-formal British style, with an emphasis on creating different growing conditions, so we can grow a large diversity of plant types.
You can read about the development and ecology of each garden room on Julie’s Substack page.
About Julie

Julie Witmer works to create beautiful and ecologically sensitive gardens across the continental United States.
She is a certified PA teacher with 23 years experience working with homeschool students and, in 2014, she obtained a Certificate of Horticulture, Britain’s professional gardener qualification, from the Royal Horticultural Society in Wisley, UK.
With a keen eye for design and place, Julie works with her private clients to help them realize their garden dreams, and provides one-on-one coaching in order to grow the skills of the gardener alongside their garden. (You can contact Julie for a garden design or for advice on the next steps to create your own garden at Julie Witmer.com.)
Julie writes the internationally-read Substack newsletter Julie Witmer Gardens, spent four years working with a local retail nursery in Harrisville, PA, and is a published garden photographer in books by Timber Press, Kew Gardens, and Rodale.
She is also a popular local speaker for master gardeners groups. She shares about the process of building her one-acre garden, Havenwood, what she has learned about valuing different growing areas to add biodiversity, as well as her love for plants!
