Conservation

Biodiversity is a foundational part of healthy ecology, and an important focus in our conservation efforts at Havenwood.

Supporting a diversity of birds and wildlife requires a wide array of plants, which means a variety of growing conditions, and the preservation or reintroduction of native plants.

In a controlled garden setting, it can also mean the inclusion of non-invasive plants from other regions—like crabapple trees, which are originally from Kazakhstan but support countless varieties of North American birds, animals, and invertebrates.

The Bartramian Audubon Sanctuary Assessment

The Bartramian Audubon Society is the sponsor of a Certified Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary Program, recognizing that certain life forms are key and sensitive indicators of environmental quality. This landowner’s conservation strategy was awarded by the Western Pennsylvania Environmental Council for “Demonstrating a commitment to environmental excellence, leadership, and unique accomplishment in the field of conservation.”

We are delighted that Havenwood has been officially recognized as an Audubon Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary! In the process, we identified dozens of unique habitats, nesting birds, and caterpillar and pollinator foods.
